Solo, Duo, Trio

We start with a solo Allt-a-bhainne, followed by a Springbank duo, concluding with a trio of Glenrothes.

  • C: The nose is decidedly aromatic followed up with a lovely & classic oily/chewy mouthful. Really decent AaB.

Springbank 21yo [2018] TBWC batch 8 [btl #415/911] 47.5% [50cl] WB87.67[5]

Whilst in the queue for dream drams, Dave pours me this. It didn’t light my fire at the time [84 score], but it was the first dram of the day and of the show, so I vowed to revisit it once I’d got warmed up. Madeira casks were involved in its maturation but in what manner or capacity I know not.

  • N: There’s a lot of minerality as one may expect, and lots of Madeira too. With an old & rare-style tomato & treacle profile, this appears similar to a 1940’s blended malt yet with a modern vibrancy.
  • T: More old & rare vibes with plenty of heather and a thick & full concentrated bitter>sweetness. Adding water brings out the herbal sugars.
  • F: More O&R heathery action with a grape-aged dryness.
  • C: Coming back to this in the afternoon, I duly score it far higher.

  • N: Fermented raisins and firm mineral notes that turn ashy.
  • T: Some heat.
  • F: [no notes]
  • C: My notes are truly pathetic I know. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this Springbank, it simply got bedimmed by so much else on offer.

Glenrothes 2004/2018 14yo HL First Editions cask #15228 [119 bts] 49.8%

  • C: Offered as a snifter, this is Glenrothes through-&-through, which is no bad thing. For consistency of quality & style, the Glenrothes distillery is a champion. Recommended session malt right here.

Glenrothes 25yo [2018] Ob. The Soleo Collection 43% WB87.25[4]

Glenrothes 25yo [2018] Ob. The Soleo Collection 43%

  • N: With ‘1st-fill sherry seasoned oak casks‘ at its core, this one is decidedly fruity in the ways you’d expect Glenrothes to be.
  • T: Sherry bung cloth.
  • F: Sherry and more sherry.
  • C: Good sherry mind.

Glenrothes 1976 39yo Ob. cask #2677 [btl #63:238] 47.4%.jpg

Glenrothes 1976/2015 39yo Ob. cask #2677 [btl #63/238] 47.4% WB92[1]

  • N: Fruity, yeasty bourbon vanilla cask action with a touch of bung.
  • T: Same again with a grainy & fluffy edge.
  • F: Concluding with straight bourbon vanilla notes, it’s strangely youthful given its age & vintage – surely bourbon cask rejuvenation action talking.
  • C: Very likeable, but at a hefty price [£830+].
